Creating Effective Research Questions

Creating Effective Research Questions

In health care, we often ask complicated questions that have a number of components and variable terminology. The way you describe your information need will impact the relevancy of the information you find.  Take control over your search results by clearly articulating what you want to find.

This session:

  • Explores the difference between background and foreground questions, and primary and secondary sources
  • Illustrates breaking down more complex questions into discrete concepts using established tools (e.g. PICO, search grid)
  • Outlines how to select a resource to search based on your question

Learning outcomes:

  • Determine the scope of information need
  • Narrow the focus of research questions
  • Identify key concepts and related terminology
  • Select appropriate resource(s) to search based on need

Recommended for: Staff, physicians and/or researchers engaged in locating information for use in practice or in the creation of knowledge resources (guidelines, policies, pamphlets, original research)
