Finding Free-to-Use Images: Public domain, open licenses, and more! Online
Copyright-compliant images can make your content more engaging and educational, whether you're creating a presentation, poster, or subject guide. In this hands-on session, you’ll work with a sample search to find free-of-charge or open-licensed photographs, illustrations, and more in Google Images, Microsoft products, as well as reputable online sources. You’ll learn to interpret how images are licensed and how to cite them appropriately.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this 60-minute session, you will know:
- How copyright relates to images.
- Where to find free-to-use images
- What Public Domain is and is not
- How to interpret Creative Commons licenses and terms-of-use
- How to cite images appropriately
Recommended for: Nova Scotia Health staff who create print, online or educational content.

To participate in an online session, you will need:
- An audio output device connected (headphones or speakers) to be able to hear the instructor
- If you do not have an audio input device (webcam or microphone), you may type in the chat window
- Experience using chat
- Experience copying/pasting text and URLs

You can join the Teams meeting on your computer or mobile app using the URL you will receive in the Confirmation and Reminder emails.
You can join a Teams meeting whether or not you have a Teams account. If you don't have an account, follow these steps to join as a 'Guest':
- Paste the Teams meeting link into a Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome browser address bar
- On the web page that opens, select Continue on this browser
- Enter your name and choose your audio/video settings
- Click Join now
