Evaluating Information: Finding Evidence-Based Research you can Trust

Evaluating Information: Finding Evidence-Based Research you can Trust Online

Description:

Now more than ever, the ability to critically evaluate information sources is crucial to finding relevant, unbiased, evidence-based research in healthcare.

Ensuring the research, we find is of the highest quality is essential before applying findings to patient care. How do we assess the content in published research (academic literature) and online (grey literature) to determine its value, relevance, and trustworthiness?

In this session, we will explore what critical appraisal is and why it is an essential step in the research process. We will also cover critical appraisal tools that can be incorporated into your research process to help appraise academic literature and grey literature systematically and effectively.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what critical appraisal is and why it’s important
  • Distinguish between academic literature and grey literature
  • Identify how critical appraisal can be incorporated into your research process
  • Select the appropriate evaluation tool based on the information source – academic literature vs. grey literature

Recommended for: All Nova Scotia staff, physicians and/or researchers looking for an introduction or needing a refresher on evaluating information sources.
